As time passed and people started overfishing, fish are no longer renewalbe anymore.
World coverage of fish has decreased by 90% and under the prevailing technology no fish can hide; at this pace
the sustainability of ocean fishing is questionable.
The fishing industry has prospered in coastal areas with rich fish population, and with the ever growing
demand for fish, it will continue to flourish until future generations. The problem with the consistently growing fishing industry is
that if dessicates various species in an area to the point where it can't rehabilitate, and the unbalance in ocean ecology
results to decling of interrelated species too. Not only that, but also the illegal fishing industry has been prevailing,
according to the data the fish caught by illegal fishing has reached 25 billion dollars.
As people continue to overfish and don't give fish time to repopulate, the likelihood of the species being
eradicated would be hightened. That is why we can say that ocean fishing is not sustainable because at his point in time, with the booming fishing industry and the mass restaurants
that depend on fish for its menu and therefore its survival, we have already overfished those species.
Also, due to the fish farming, where expensive fishes are fed by smaller fishes such as entropies results
to decline in small fish population which is the food source for most of the big fishes in the ocean. Also, it takes
5kg of small fish to produce 1kg of big fish which is a huge disadvantage for the lucrative. This phenomenon is due to the large demand
for expensive fish from the richer human population. This wasteful practice accounts to the rapidly declining fish
population.
However, there has been various attempts to rehabilitate the population of fish in the ocean. For example, Alaska,
allows the fishermen to fish for a limited time only, resulting to increase of fish population by a multiple of 3 by a couple
of years. Also, some countries assign marine protected area which inhibits fishermen to fish in the area. But, marine protected
area only accounts to 1% of the ocean, thus, allowing the fishermen to continue fishing.
